this thought came to me while i was searching up the princess & the pauper playlist to listen to once again so self-indulgent but:

imagine the princess and the pauper always being your default movie to put on when you were younger. you come home from school? you want to watch it. you cant go out cause its raining? movie time and its that one. you're sick? you play it to cheer you up.

at some point, maybe you don't even realize, you've watched it so often that every lyric of every song is tattooed into your memory, maybe even most of, if not all of, the dialogue.

now, imagine: you're not the only one this affects.

caleb would always tease you for watching that one same movie so often when there were so many other and much better ones to choose from in his words, but every time (if he wasn't caught up with something already) would be sitting right next to you, indulging you and watching the familiar scenes and songs play on the screen.

now, unconsciously, he's also committed the songs to memory, and even the accompanying dialogue between the lyrics without your knowledge.

so then one day you put it on, same as usual, and you're singing along to the songs because you just can't resist, and then to be a princess comes on, and you plan to listen to it through even though you know the lyrics, only for caleb's voice to recite the dialogue before the character onscreen breaks into song, and he so easily keeps up with it.

you're staring at him, absolutely baffled, mouth open in shock and he just looks at you with this satisfied look in his eyes as he carries on, and you manage to mumble along to the duet parts but you're so fixated on caleb the entire time and wow, does he have a nice singing voice......

at another point, the duet between the pauper and the king plays and you start, wondering if he'll join in on this one as well, and he does, and you're each singing your part of the lyrics and somehow you both seem to be getting just a little bit closer to each other, and then the singing overlaps near the end and you both recite it beautifully, an invisible force pulling your faces closer and closer that when the song ends and the two onscreen are gazing at the sunset, you're gazing into the same view in his eyes, so lost in the sunset of them as you feel his warm breath on your lips and wait for either of you to be brave enough to make the move before you watch them crinkle and he pulls back slightly, tilting his head as he looks at the screen.

"oh, i could've swore they kissed here.... hm."

and you blink up at him, heart hammering in your chest and face burning because there's no way he just did that.

"caleeeb!"

and he revels in your embarrassed pout gazing up at him through your lashes, so obviously upset at him.

"hm? what?" he leans down again slightly, mischief surrounding his irises. "haven't you seen this more than me? shouldn't you have known that?"

"that's.. not......"

you're stammering, knowing that he's messing with you, and thinking he's so cruel, dangling your desire right in front of you like that only to snatch it away all too easily.

so cruel for having all the power over you.

"i just thought..."

"what? you wanted to kiss me?"

"caleb! just— just forget it, its—"

at that moment, he grips your chin between his thumb and index finger, pulling your face towards his and crashing his lips onto yours.

when he pulls back, your eyes flutter open to see his pleased grin stretched across his lips, and you're completely stunned trying to process what just happened.

"hmm, what do you think?' he murmurs, smiling. "do i resemble the king or the male pauper more?"

you take a moment to think as you float back to reality.

"their names are dominick and julian."

he laughs at your little pout as you correct him.

"yes, yes, forgive me, princess," he replies, affectionately petting your head, your heart fluttering at the unexpected nickname as he settles in closer to you, eyes drifting back to the screen.

the movie has always served good memories for you, but now you have something even lovelier to associate it with.

a lot of people tend to think leon is constantly very angry with, or at least frustrated by ada, on account of her lies and manipulation, and while i do believe that feeling of his applies to all of their interactions of re2, i believe this frustration is not that present post re2, and it is in fact is because so many players project their own anger, frustration and even hatred of ada onto leon in the later games, as the more time he spends as a government agent, the more he understands ada and the world she comes from.

leons core tenet is that he wants to help people, so what does he do? he becomes a police officer because he believes cops do the most good (a sentiment that shows he is wearing EXTREMELY rose colored glasses lol), and then he heads to Raccoon City, and while in RC he helps everyone he can. and he is SO good natured that the idea that ada could be lying to him is so far from his mind (NOTE: this is NOT a sign of him being the heavily infantilized man fans make him out to be, and more a sign of general ignorance of the world, as frankly, nobody besides annette has any reason to believe ada would be a spy) because the world of mercenaries and espionage are so far removed from what he believes to be his reality. this is a man who fully believed becoming a police officer was the right way to help people. (and yes im aware of his established backstory where a cop saved him when the rest of his family died due to some crime. this still doesnt make being a cop the right thing to do.)

and so ada strings him along for her own personal gain, and at the end leon learns of her deceit. and the biggest betrayal leon experiences is not from ada, its just that the confrontation scene is the 11 o'clock number for leons half of the game, thus making it stick with us longer, as we the player have also been fooled by her. but no, the biggest betrayal happens when the government decides to cover up the horrors of raccoon city and use sherry as collateral to get him to work for them. and, unfortunately, this is only shown for a few minutes in resident evil darkside chronicles and in the epilogue screens of the original resident evil 3 (re 4 remake might add more to this, but that game hasnt come out as of yet, but heres hoping lol), so we dont fully get to see how he reacted to that outside of these moments and a few other passing thoughts in the series.

but!!! leons entire worldview crumbles after the events of 2, and the next time leon and ada meet in 4, he is wise to the world, and he has seen firsthand the atrocities the united states government is willing to commit under the guise of helping people. and people like ada, people who lie and manipulate and work for evil, greedy organizations (well intentioned or not) are now everywhere. theyre a dime a dozen. they are annette. they are luis. they are krauser. they were his recruiter. they are his boss. they are the president. they are the entire government he was so excited to work for.

ada just has the benefit of being his first introduction to these kinds of people

to be clear, im not saying leon is suddenly okay with her half-truths, but i am saying after he is forced to work for the government, he understands her, or at least, understands people like her, so much more so he knows exactly what to expect. just not when to expect it.

Animal Games A Lawlight Gone Girl AU (Part Two) Part One 7.4k words Read on AO3 L has moved his lovely, vile, and entirely batshit husband out of their beautiful Brooklyn brownstone into a Missouri suburb, then left him to his own devices. He is under the impression that this is going to end well. In this part: Light gets to say his piece. Content notes: Deals substantially with concerning age dynamics, as well as racism and homophobia; a few slurs are present. Light is as vile as ever. Past childhood abuse is discussed. Suicide is repeatedly invoked, albeit in a way that parallels Gone Girl. There's some arguably disordered eating. Thank you so much to @lightyaoigami for doing so much research and holding hands in worldbuilding and character creation! Everything about New York comes from Monica, and so do all the designer clothes, L's midlife crisis car, and a great deal of the characterization. Monica did so much that it's honestly kind of hard to describe all of it; imo all the best parts of this fic come from her.

I had a perfectly nice life in Brooklyn. I had friends. Friends don't come easily to me, I'll admit that, but I made them anyway. I had a beautiful little apartment in Cobble Hill with real brick walls and portes-fenêtres that opened onto a wrought-iron Juliette balcony and a coffee shop a three minute walk away where I could drink real espresso and eat honey-lemon cornmeal cake and do the work he thinks is so pathetically beneath me which by the way, it isn't. I liked it. It was my job. He worked for a fucking fashion magazine, for god's sake. He wrote about pants and peplums. It wasn't exactly hard-hitting news.

It isn't as if I didn't earn any of what I had because I grew up in a two-story.

Why should I have to throw all of that out because he thought it might be nice to have a lawn when he was seven years old? [continue]
